Breast Implant Registry

Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) maintains the Breast Implant Registry (BIR) to collect information relating to the patient, surgeon, procedural and implant data relating to breast implants. The information is provided with the understanding that ASPS is not engaged in rendering plastic surgery procedures, giving medical advice or recommendations.

Important
If you are experiencing problems or wish to seek medical advice in relation to an implant or procedure ASPS recommends that you consult your surgeon.

A list of qualified plastic and reconstructive surgeons can be found by using the Surgeon Search tool on the left of this page and throughout the ASPS website.

General information about implants and procedures can be found in the Patients and Consumers section of the website.  Information is for general purposes only. Any decision to undergo a medical procedure should be part of a consultation with a qualified surgeon.

Privilege and Security

The Breast Implant Registry is a government endorsed public health initiative aimed at increasing patient safety. The Registry was declared a Qualified Privilege Scheme from the Federal Government’s Department of Health and Ageing. ASPS manages, administers and operates the Registry as an Official Quality Assurance Activity.

The Breast Implant Registry has been created to provide patients with a secure and safe environment to record their data following a breast implant procedure. The Registry allows male and female patients to maintain their breast implant data in an easy, accessible and confidential way.

Patients may need to retrieve important information about their surgery and implants. It is important that patient data is maintained in a secure and accessible location. The Breast Implant Registry ensures that patient data remains intact, is accessible and secure.

Choosing to become part of the Registry allows patients to be contacted should there be any concerns regarding the breast implants they have received.

Research on Breast Implants

With consent, patients participating in the Registry can have their breast implant data stripped of anything which could identify them. This data may then be used for ongoing medical research. This research can inform and educate surgeons on best practice surgical techniques and monitor and maintain the quality assurance of implant types. This can lead to more successful breast implant procedures and increases patient welfare, safety and satisfaction. Ultimately, public health outcomes can be improved.

All patient and surgeon data is kept on a secure server which ensures data is safe and protected. Only those authorized to can gain access to records.

Become Involved

The Breast Implant Registry is an “opt-in” database.

Therefore you should insist on participating in the Breast Implant Registry, it is your right and helps to ensure quality and standards in health and safety.

Patients who wish to be involved need to contact their surgeon. Alternatively please contact ASPS with your address details and we can arrange a mail out of the appropriate forms.
(Registration, data collection and access to information services by ASPS attract a small fee.)
