Selection for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Training

On this web page you will find information on:

Trainee Selection

Plastic Surgeon trainees are competitively selected based on their potential to be the best surgical leaders and provide the highest quality of patient care. Applicants are chosen from a broad talent pool. All eligible applicants have completed two years of experience following graduation from medical school and a minimum of nine weeks of plastic surgery experience in a public hospital. As individuals, the applicants are results oriented, driven for success and demonstrate sound research and surgical skills. Integrity, ethical standards and communication skills are also key criteria in the selection process. Potential trainees are also measured against the RACS competencies.

For more information on surgical selection  and selection regulations go to the RACS website.

Information for 2012 Applicants

For selection in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery training to commence in 2013.

Applications for selection into Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in 2012 will open for registration on 11 January 2012. Details are available from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (the College) website at:
http://www.surgeons.org/racs/education--trainees/becoming-a-surgeon/selection-requirements

Since the implementation of the SET Program there has been a two stage application process, consisting of a registration phase (co-ordinated by the College), followed by the application lodgement phase for eligible applicants (co-ordinated by the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons).

At the completion of registration the College assesses each registrant against the generic eligibility requirements of general (unrestricted) medical registration and permanent residency. Ineligible applicants are advised accordingly and cannot proceed to the application lodgement phase.
