If you have a concern or complaint we suggest in the first instance to discuss the problem with the Surgeon. Discuss with the surgeon your concerns and ask if they can help.

The HQCC and AHPRA

The way the HQCC and AHPRA work together is governed both by the National Law and the Health Quality and Complaints Commission Act 2006 (HQCC Act).

The HQCC Act and the National Law both use the word 'complaint' to refer to a complaint made to a health complaints entity, such as the HQCC, and the word 'notification' to refer to a matter raised with a National Board through mandatory or voluntary notification.

If the HQCC receives a complaint about a health practitioner, the HQCC must:

    * notify the National Board (through AHPRA) as soon as practicable
    * give the National Board a copy of the complaint, and other information.

If a National Board receives a notification which would also provide a ground for a complaint to the HQCC, the National Board (through AHPRA) must:

    * notify the HQCC as soon as practicable
    * give the HQCC a copy of the notification, and other information.

AHPRA and the HQCC then consult as to whether the notification or complaint should be dealt with by the National Board or by the HQCC. If agreement cannot be reached, the most serious action (open to either the HQCC in the case of a complaint or the National Board in the case of a notification) proposed by either organisation must be taken.
